October 2018

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

October 2018 is Brie O.

CAVE staff nominated Brie because she has many interests, she is very intelligent and she is very daring to try new things.

Brie has been in the CAVE program since her sophomore year. She is a member of CAVE's Honor Society. She has a hard time choosing between English and Social Studies as her favorite classes. She state, "I love examining society from all angles, and every social studies class offers the opportunity to understand people and societal institutions in new ways. With CAVE, I’ve had the opportunity to study psychology, world religions, and sociology, and this year I’m fortunate to have the chance to study criminal justice and philosophy at the University of Wisconsin through CAVE’s dual credit program. Mrs. Ranis has been instrumental in supporting me through all my different social studies endeavors, equipping me with a strong liberal arts curriculum. I also have fallen in love with English through CAVE’s project-based learning classes. Mrs. David has allowed me to drive my education through this, teaching me how understanding the world of literature helps people learn more about themselves. This year, I’m looking forward to taking a project-based creative writing class with Mrs. David! "

Brie's hobbies include exploring the supernatural and unknown. Whether it is going on midnight Bigfoot hunts or participating in annual local ghost tours come Halloween. Brie states, "It is enchanting to keep our minds and hearts open to all the vast possibilities. " Brie loves writing and she does journaling, poetry and short stories. She also performs in plays, writes music, sings and plays the piano. Brie says, "My love of performing and writing has extended into my interest in Theater." She hopes to get some friends together to produce a low-budget film.

Brie's plans after high school are a bit indecisive. She does not see her journey as linear or leading up to one "final supernova of success", however she would like to return to the country of Turkey where she spend the summer of her 8th grade. She also hopes to find time to explore her every curiosity. She also plans on volunteering her time on organic farms, going to Costa Rica to research the healing properties of native plants, and possibly working towards being a modern-day apothecary who researches and creates new age remedies.

Brie's advice to new CAVE students is to "take advantage of every opportunity you’re offered! Most traditional students don’t get the chance to personalize their education paths like we do, so use this curriculum for all that it’s worth! See what project-based learning and dual-credit college classes bring you! Use the flexibility in time to take different internships, create your own literary magazine, or maybe even consider studying abroad. Most importantly, see to it that you view every challenge as an opportunity to grow and become better!"
